Sustainability Base - NASA's Space Station on Earth

THE INNOVATION:

What really makes this facility a “smart” building is the innovative application of NASA technologies. One such application is the building’s embedded advanced intelligent control technology, which was derived from software originally developed for NASA’s Aviation Safety Program. Other repurposed technologies include an Inductive Monitoring System (IMS) and Hybrid Diagnostic Engine (HyDE), both originally developed at Ames.

• Leadership is described as being taken to someplace you would have never gotten to on your own. NASA's leadership in space is the kind of leadership we need on earth.
• The current designs are destructive to the earth and its systems and we need designs that are positive to the earth and its systems.
• This closed loop thinking that NASA has to do.... is something we try to employ on earth. And so it's a wonderful wedding of technologies and architecture and design and sustainability.
• It fits with the ideas of the self-sufficiency goals of a lunar base.
• By linking the choices of an individual, to the performance of a building, to the energy consumption of a city, to the carbon footprint of a region, we can better understand and manage climate change.
• The Sustainability Base will serve as an icon to NASA's commitment to solving the sustainability challenges we face on earth.
