Excerpts:

"Can humanity free itself from climate change paralysis?" ... The change that's going to be necessary is going to happen in cities, and it's not going to happen anyplace else.

Right now [cities with Climate Action Plans]... are cities that want to do something... but now we don't have resources, we don't have models to engage our cities especially in the residential sector. With the Cool City Challenge we'll be able to do that.

The world's cities are responsibile for up to 70% of GhG emissions.

[The CCC is based on proven programs, practiced in] 300 cities in 8 countries... The households averaged greater than 5000 lbs reduction. But we had gone a mile wide and an inch deep. We knew we had to actually now pull in the reins and ... go deep in a few communities.... We will be working with 3 cities over 3 years.....household by household, neighborhood by neighborhood.

David is a visionary. He has learned what works and doesn't work. He has taken motivation and turned [it] into a science.

[We set out to answer] three questions. Can we change behavior? Can we sustain it over time? Can we take it to scale?... We used a structured program, recipe-style actions, peer groups of neighbors, and replicated it over hundreds and hundreds of blocks.

We are tapping intrinsic motivators... Amazing conversation and amazing action was happening in our one group. What gets me really excited is imagining that happening... in all kinds of different homes.... rippling out over the whole community... It is incredibly powerful, and very simple at the same time.

The opportunity of the Cool City Challenge, without the need for policy, is the best government I can think of.

If we can scale this beyond a few communities.. it looks like a different future for California, for the country, for the world.

1. Corporate Projects: We work with companies to connect nature’s adaptations to specific design and industrial challenges. Our process typically comprises three phases: (1) challenge scoping and definition, (2) ideation workshop(s) and (3) development workshop(s).

2. Centre Development Projects:Our team applies San Diego Zoo Global’s collective knowledge and expertise to advance internally-developed technologies, processes, and ideas. We offer out-licensing and partnership opportunities to select companies and organizations.

3. Education and Outreach: The Centre promotes our interdisciplinary approach to problem solving through speaking engagements, corporate services, and collaborations. San Diego Zoo Global education programs encourage students of all ages to observe, create, and design alongside plants and animals.

Conversation with the Managing Director -- Excerpts:

[We are trying to] formalize technology transfer of Nature’s ideas. It’s 4 billion years of evolution. Nature’s thrown away all those mistakes.. kept a lot of adaptations that are fascinating, and we’re starting to learn that they may address many of the challenges we face in industry.

The CFO at the zoo, Paula Brock, over five years ago realized the vast amount of information that is sitting in the zoo in the animal and plant collections and the people taking care of them… and how that applied to this new field of biomimicry, which we refer to as bioinspiration…. We are absolutely a natural to contribute to that.

We are building a model…that can be used by botanical gardens, aquaria, natural history museums, and others who are sitting on a wealth of information.

A number of the top corporations in the U.S. and Europe have contacted us and said “We have an industrial challenge…” and we started taking them on.

We broke it down into functions that we could link to nature’s adaptations…. That alone creates a lot of innovation... Next we developed it into a working model to come up with new materials and new ways…

Meanwhile, lifecycle materials management is being revealed as able to outperform those sectors in terms of impact – not because transportation and the built environment are not big emissions contributors, but because the impact of materials is so great. This I learned at a webinar on climate action planning this morning, part of a dynamite series on the under-explored topic of materials management by the EPA's West Coast Forum on Climate and Materials.

While the climate impacts of materials have remained largely out of the conversation, that needs to change -- and now. It is time that we VALUE materials, and begin seeing them both as the carbon-emitters and reusable earthly treasures that they are. Today's innovation stories, from the 2013 GreenBiz Forum in San Francisco, describe just that.

Excerpts:

What we’re doing is taking everyday objects that you might throw away and finding a new use for them… in this case making a portable speaker inside of a soda can. [“What will they think of next?"] That’s right! The thing that’s innovative about it is, upcycling is an age-old idea… this product says it in a way that is really accessible – and cool.

[When kids are introduced to upcycling] one of two things happens, neither of which is very useful… Either it's: "Let’s take a milk-carton and fill it up with sand, and now we have a doorstop." That doesn’t inspire anyone to change the world. Or some green companies are recycling car tires into shoe soles. That’s cool, but kids don’t see the connection [because they can no longer see the tires].

We are bringing together two things that are easily recognizable – music and soda cans. Two things everyone recognizes. Two things that no one has ever considered to pair. It’s not very complicated to see that all we did is cut the top off. So it's easy to understand.

[“There should be one of these in every backpack.”] Yeah! It fits anywhere you can fit a water bottle – on your bike, in your car. The uses are really limitless. [“All these people have already accommodated this package, so why not use that accommodation for something new?”] That’s right.

In college my roommate had an assignment to make a [speaker] and put it into an Altoids tin. It didn’t sound very good, so he then put it into a soda can. We’re both musicians and played together a lot, and I said, maybe we could turn this into a product.

The first prototypes were labor intensive, we [needed to be able to] make enough for people to latch onto.

Brand partnership potential is at three levels – “We’re adding value to your product, so you should pay us a licensing fee”… or "It doesn’t have to be your brand, but it could be, and it could really elevate your brand… so why shouldn’t you be paying us." The space in between is we are both benefiting… kind of a break-even scenario.

[This can help them] grow up with a framework of upcycling… [”The value is beyond what TrashAmps is itself, but what it represents and what it inspires for the future”.] Yeah, I’m really inspired about that aspect in particular. I know there’s a lot of things I’ve been inspired by that [led to] creating this. [I like] creating that platform… for others to be creative and to experiment -- getting people thinking about it.

A lot of my design efforts have gone into saying – how are [all these parts] going to fit in this little package that already exists, and the dimensions are fixed?… [“You use the packaging that you’re given as your creative constraint.”] Upcycling is more complicated than products where you design something and have it made. But I think it results in products that are cooler, more inspirational, and more meaningful.

Always try new things…Even if it doesn’t turn into a huge success.. It could be that seed that you plant in someone else that could lead to more success.

We take pre-consumer excess materials that are leftover from the manufacturing process, and upcycle them into items of higher environmental value, typically clothing, accessories, cases, bags, laptops sleeves, etc.

There is an estimated about 70x more pre-consumer excess on the planet than there is post-, which means the stuff that comes out of manufacturing out-numbers the stuff that we’re recycling as consumers

At the manufacturing level, that’s where things are going awry. We [wanted to] lift the curtain on pre-consumer excess...since consumers don’t see this everyday.

The materials are brand new, they may have come off the cutting room floor or as bulk rolls or something like that, but if you apply design to that you can make a product that is just as desirable as a first-run product.

This flips design on its head… It’s no longer a designer saying “Oh, I can make this..and we’ll use these materials and these materials." No- [instead] these are the materials you have... [“You’re really embracing the creative constraints of ‘What-is “ in terms of excess material availability".] Yes, that’s correct.

["How do you get those materials as part of your supply chain?”] That would take hours to explain. There’s a little bit of secret sauce…. Myself and my partner have an extensive network; there’s a bit of a process there, not something you can do real quick…. We built our own infrastructure for that.

I was in the industry before. I worked for an outdoor apparel company, and I was part of the problem. I would see the waste, but also contribute to creating the waste. No one was asking where any of this stuff goes, it was just a cost of doing business. I realized this had to change, and I decided I needed to be part of the solution instead of the problem.

Once you’ve come up with the idea and what’s different, I would encourage people to try to execute that inside the system that already exists, ... if there is an ability and a willingness to change... From our perspective, we didn’t have that…. They were focused... and couldn’t take the time for that distraction. In our system, it was up to us to maybe create a model for being able to do those things. ["So you spun out."] Yes, that's what we did.

Other compelling observations on the excitement ahead:

from Rachel Barge, reporting on VERGE: Accelerate:
Perhaps the stickiest quote of the conversation came from Mitch Lowe: 'Cleantech’s dead in the same way the Internet was dead in 2000.' … Just as Internet and computing companies of the mid and late 1990’s laid the foundation for the booming web industry today, cleantech of the mid-2000’s laid the infrastructural groundwork for the emerging digital cleantech industry to expand. These are models where positive environmental impacts are a happy outcome of adoption, but not the primary value proposition of why customers bought the product or used the service.

Core concepts of VERGE were affirmed in a subsequent announcement by GE and reported by Joel: In many ways, GE’s new Industrial Internet push — articulated in a report issued last week and at a high-profile San Francisco event — meshes with (and validates) our global series of VERGE events, which cover similar ground: the convergence of systems and technologies around buildings and transportation, and how data and IT create new platforms that enable radical efficiencies, breakthrough business models, and innovative products and services.

The current designs are destructive to the earth and its systems and we need designs that are positive to the earth and its systems.

This closed loop thinking that NASA has to do.... is something we try to employ on earth. And so it's a wonderful wedding of technologies and architecture and design and sustainability.

It fits with the ideas of the self-sufficiency goals of a lunar base.

By linking the choices of an individual, to the performance of a building, to the energy consumption of a city, to the carbon footprint of a region, we can better understand and manage climate change.

The Sustainability Base will serve as an icon to NASA's commitment to solving the sustainability challenges we face on earth.

Excerpts:

" Socially-responsible means something different to absolutely every person on earth"

According to Longsplice's definition: “Good Corporate Citizens practice Respect:

for the environment

for human and workers' rights

for shareholders

for the less fortunate"

"I've found an aspect of finance that's very modeling and simulation - oriented, just like what I did as a chip designer, so in a whole new field I was right at home using skills I seemed to be pretty good at"

Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? "Go for it" and "Have savings before you commit to supporting yourself"

"By the time I retire-- again-- I want 'socially-responsible mutual fund' to be redundant. I want all investing to be socially responsible."
